2023 Subaru Legacy since the 2023 model is the fourth year of the model cycle, we’re expecting what Subaru describes as a BMC, or “big little change”. On the outside of the 2023 Subaru Legacy, we are expecting changes to the headlights, front tire covers, options on the updated wheels, and some new color options.

On the inside, we usually see a new instrument cluster or changes to materials/fabrics. When Subaru publishes the changes, we will update this page.

Introduced in 1990 as a small Japanese car, the Legacy has grown in size and sophistication. Until 2007, you could buy Legacy sedans and wagons, which is a bit confusing because the more powerful Outback is also based on the Legacy platform.

(To make things even more confusing was the Outback Sedan, from 1997 to 2007). The point is if you want a midsize sedan then we recommend the 2023 Subaru Legacy as an option and if you want a more midsize wagon then the Outback is the best.

2023 Subaru Legacy Review

The Subaru Legacy 2023 flies under the radar in terms of conservative design, although the midsize sedan’s all-wheel drive (AWD) standards make it particularly attractive to car buyers who want to add more road grip but prefer to stay away from SUVs.

2023 Subaru Legacy

This gives the Legacy an acquired taste, even among the automaker’s own higher-drive offerings such as the Outback wagon and Forester SUV. Each also comes standard with AWD, and each has the higher ride and extra ground clearance that make crossovers and SUVs so popular.

No, the Legacy is too polite to make a fuss or hit the chest with all-terrain frivolity like underbody skid plates, excessive body cladding or thick all-terrain tires. With this in mind, we expect Subaru to be able to give the Legacy a light exterior and interior refresh for the 2023 model year.

This generation is from 2020 and the time is right to get rid of some of the mid-cycle sedans with a mid-cycle refresh.

Pitted against rival 5-seater sedans such as the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry, the Legacy stands out for its roomy cabin, spacious trunk and long list of standard active safety features.

If safety is a major concern, know that the Legacy has an excellent reputation for scoring top marks in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Standard safety items include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights, lane departure warning and more. It’s all part of what Subaru calls the EyeSight driver-assist suite of features.

Bringing Subaru to the road is a 182-horsepower flat-4 engine coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

This powertrain is fine for most driving needs, although the optional 260-horsepower turbocharged inline-4 in the XT model adds more muscle to this understated sedan. The steering is nice and linear and the suspension is tuned more for comfort than corner antics, which is probably fine with most sedan buyers.

An easy-to-use 7-inch touchscreen is standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

It’s worth noting the Legacy Premium trim, just one over the base model, includes an 11.6-inch screen and brings with it a Wi-Fi hot spot, an upgraded audio system, and an additional USB port.

2023 Subaru Legacy Price

We expect the entry-level Subaru Legacy 2023 midsize sedan to have an asking price of around $24,000. That’s right in the middle of a competition that includes the Nissan Altima, Kia K5, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry.

Stepping up to the fuller Premium trim will cost around $26,000, which is still a solid value.

The Legacy Limited is the most luxurious trim available with the standard 4 cylinder engine. It’s a sticker for about $30,000.

While the added performance of the optional turbocharged inline-4 in the 2023 Subaru Legacy XT is entertaining, the price jump is also significant. The Legacy Limited XT costs around $35,000, and the 2023 Subaru Legacy Touring XT is about $2,000 above that price point.
