2023 Subaru Forester has been around for more than a quarter of a century now, riding the SUV wave since its inception and becoming one of the Japanese automaker’s most successful models.
For five generations, Forester has helped shape the image of Subaru as have rally performance models like the original Impreza WRX STI. The Forester – especially in the new Wilderness trim introduced for 2022 – has a simple, carry-anywhere personality that no other small crossover SUV can match.
This is what makes it attractive for snowy weather or unpaved roads that might challenge other crossovers. It’s not the sportiest or most premium vehicle in its class, but it doesn’t have to be.
Standard all-wheel drive and better-than-average ground clearance give the Forester more off-road prowess than a standard crossover.
The new Wilderness trim elevates off-road capability even further with items like all-terrain tires and slightly higher ground clearance, but don’t expect the level of performance of a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco.
Other changes introduced for 2022 include a restyled front grille, improved roof rails with increased load capacity, and an increase in crane rating to 3,000 pounds. The upgrade enhances Forester’s do-it-all nature, making it easier to pitch a tent on the roof or tow a larger camper.
Forester also has a comfortable and spacious cabin with lots of in-car technology and a standard set of driver aids. But while the infotainment and navigation look impressive, they can be tricky to use compared to some rival systems. With the recent refresh, we don’t expect significant changes for 2023.
Forester has plenty of competition, with every major automaker offering a small crossover SUV at this price point. While we rate the Forester very highly, some of Edmunds’ other favorites include the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue.
2023 Subaru Forester Review: New Subaru Forester 2023
The Subaru Forester 2023 continues to offer strong value, standard all-wheel drive, and a spacious cabin for passengers. It doesn’t matter if the 2023 Forester also features a spacious cargo area, an impressive set of standard active safety features, plus excellent outside visibility thanks to the upright seating position and large windows.
After all, what’s the point of having a family-friendly SUV loaded with safety tech if you can’t actually see the front, sides, and back of the vehicle?
Fresh from the redesign for the 2022 model year, we expect the Forester 2023 to remain relatively unchanged except for minor trim changes, or new choices of exterior colors or wheel designs.
With the competition that includes the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson, Subaru keeps the Forester fresh and in top form.
With this in mind, Subaru may surprise us with an engine upgrade for the 2023 model year. Expect the base powertrain to continue to be a 182-horsepower 4-cylinder coupled with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
This powertrain is great for everyday driving, and it’s also pretty good in terms of fuel economy.
But previous iterations of the Forester have offered a more powerful turbo 4 cylinder, which gives this agile SUV added straight-line vibrancy. While the turbo has remained absent from the options sheet since this generation Forester appeared as a 2019 model, we hope that Subaru can add one at some point.
Another possibility is some degree of electrification, with hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants missing from the Forester lineup.
If you want added visual toughness in your Subaru, the Wilderness trim was added last year and brings extra ride height, all-terrain trials, chunky-looking black plastic body trim, 180-degree front view monitor, and selectable driver-mode for traversing mud. and snow. The Forester has a rugged-looking exterior that makes it look ready to tackle dirt roads, with a black plastic finish around the fenders and bumper. The interior is one of the best that Subaru has to offer, clad in durable materials and a well-appointed dashboard.
Additionally, the Forester Sport gets some eye-catching orange accents inside and out, while the Wilderness model shows off its off-road prowess with a raised suspension, extra plastic coating, skid plates, and water-repellent coating.

The Forester currently has a single engine option, with the BOXER 2.5 liter engine producing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. That’s certainly not enough for those looking for a sporty feel, but it’s good enough for most Subaru buyers.
All models are also equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission and asymmetrical Subaru all-wheel-drive.
Like all Subaru models, the Forester is equipped with standard active safety features as part of what Subaru calls the Vision system.

2023 Subaru Forester Redesign
After a mid-cycle refresh for 2022 that includes the addition of a new off-road-ready Wilderness trim, we’re not expecting much in terms of updates for the 2023 model. There may be the availability of expanded features or new paint options, but nothing major.

The Forester is a very practical choice. It boasts a spacious interior and comfortable ride quality, with excellent outside visibility and plenty of cargo space. The second-row doors also open wide, which makes it easier to fit a child seat.
The touchscreen infotainment system is intuitive and responsive. The Forester also gets an excellent safety rating and includes a Subaru driver assistance suite as standard.
All that said, the Forester is far from the fastest or most attractive vehicle in its segment. Its only engine option is light power, hindering off-road capability. While we appreciate standard AWD, fuel economy is reduced.
There is no hybrid variant either. However, no other car in this segment offers an off-road variant as complete as the Forester Wilderness.
As a package, the Forester is perfect for buyers who prioritize practicality over driving dynamics or performance. This would be an easy recommendation if it weren’t for the unmatched competence of the Honda CR-V.
Subaru Forester 2023 Rumors
Rumors suggest the new Forester could debut as early as 2023. It is estimated that the sixth-generation car will be based on the latest version of the Subaru Global Platform.
This architecture underpins all of the company’s export-oriented models except for the rear-wheel-drive BRZ coupe, and the upcoming Solterra electric crossover which shares a custom EV architecture with the Toyota bZ4X.
2023 Subaru Forester Hybrid
The Subaru Forester may have just received a facelift, an all-new next-generation model already in development. The next iteration of the Subaru SUV model is expected to be equipped with hybrid technology from Toyota and is rumored to debut after 2023.
Unlike the Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ sports car and the Toyota bZ4x / Subaru Solterra electric SUV that was co-developed as sister models, the next Subaru Forester is not expected to be an updated Toyota RAV4.

2023 Subaru Forester Turbo
If you find the current Subaru Forester e-Boxer Hybrid a little disappointing in terms of power and fuel economy, there are solutions in the works but you’ll have to wait until the next-generation model.
According to Mag-X, the next-generation Subaru Forester will be offered with a hybrid drivetrain featuring two electric motors and an Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a small turbo.

Reviewers, including our own Mike Costello and Paul Maric, haven’t been impressed with this drivetrain. The small electric motor means the petrol engine has to do a lot more work than expected, and as a result, fuel economy isn’t very stellar at 6.7L/100km.
